REINER For once, the silence of the forest had not eluded him. A quiet, still night with the long forgotten feeling of a quiet, dreamless sleep. His first in weeks. It was a strange smoothness that greeted him when he woke up, his grey eyes blinking away sleep as a yawn erupted, ivory teeth baring slightly. There was no typical chirping of morning doves, no crunch of leaves from a far too fearless rabbit that hadn't yet noticed his proximity to a pack of wolves
He rose from where he was laying to peer outside the darkness of the den. Where was he exactly? Perplexed, Reiner narrowed his eyes as he gazed outside. By scent alone, he was definitely still in Dürkell lands. But where? Was he in the main pack grounds, or somewhere in the exclusive, hunting realms? His mind grumbled angrily at being forced to work so early. And then, amongst the silence, he heard it.
It was soft at first, a gentle push and pull of breath. Lingering on the horizon of reality and fantasy, the male considered the sound's quality before moving. It couldn't be. It had to be. Reiner turned slowly to look. It took seconds to realize where he was once he saw the beige fur, and only a few seconds more for conformation as he breathed the air more deeply. There was no doubt it was her. The black claws, the faded scar across her pale face. When she awoke, she would blink at him with those ravishing, debilitating ocean eyes of hers. And, she would answer to the name of "Hayashi".
The male, his mind bickering over the scenario, wasn't sure whether to pause and congratulate himself for somehow ending up in the Alpha den, or to quit while he was ahead and find a way to slip out of this sticky situation. He wasn't quite sure of the pretenses of his prolonged visit--whether Hayashi had been accepting of his arrival or all too soon done with him--and frankly, he wasn't sure he wanted to find out. Better save the heartache for later and in a place that was more public so she couldn't completely annihilate him.
Reiner carefully, and as gradually as possible, lifted himself off the den's floor and moved to exit the den. Throwing a last look over his shoulder was the part he should have avoided. As soon as he saw the innocence on her sleeping figure, his paws were rooted to the spot, incapable of either leaving or staying. Leaving was the smartest option and the one with the best outlook for keeping a better majority of his fur. She'd be beyond upset with him if she remembered anything that had happened--if anything had happened--but she'd be forever on the outs with him for bolting the next morning.
Sighing, Reiner folded. He might as well play the gentleman card for now. He hadn't slept that peacefully in too long, let alone having been without Sicoya's nagging voice in his ears. The red male cautiously crept back to his sleeping place next to the she-wolf, his paws slick on the hard floor. Now would not do well to mess up, especially like this. Dropping his frame to lay closer to the sleeping queen, Reiner's breathing fell into sync within moments. This is what he'd wanted all along. No Sicoya, just Hayashi and a forest of silence.
Acting as if nothing had happened, the male snuggled ever closer to the beige fur, attentive to the position of his paws. For all he knew, nothing had happened last night and he'd simply fallen asleep besides the pretty Alpha by mistake. Lucky break, champ. I need to do this more often.

She dreamed. She dreamed just like she did every night, dreams consisting of mistakes, pain, love. And just like most nights, she had nightmares. This time, she was running, darting through the forest. It was black, foggy, and eerie; she could barely see where she was going. Her breath was labored, her eyes wide. She was terrified. And every time she threw a look over her beige shoulder, she could spot a white ball of fur, bright eyes and snarling teeth chasing her. It was Mirage. As she watched, Hayashi saw her drop her head and pick up the pace, faster than she thought she could ever run. Panicked, Hayashi dug her paws into the wet earth and tried to quicken her stride. She knew she couldn't stand up to Mirage. She was afraid of her. Mirage was cunning, bold, and beautiful, charming enough to even steal Hayashi's mate. She knew she couldn't face her emotionally, let alone fight her. Hayashi was bold, but not that bold.
Her paws flew over branches and rocks, her heart ready to pound out of her labored chest. Without looking, she knew Mirage was closing on her. She could hear her cackle, feel her breath. And as Hayashi continued to run, a sense of tiredness suddenly hit her limbs. She couldn't go on. She caved in and tripped over a branch that sent her flying down a steep hill; rolling, flailing she went. As soon as she came to a stop, she didn't even try to move. She could feel her presence. When she opened her eyes, she could see Mirage spread her jaws to grin, her eyes gleaming as a sharp cackle escaped her lips. Fear-stricken, Hayashi tried to scramble away, but Mirage was too fast. She leaped, jaws wide to deliver the killing blow and Hayashi screamed and -
Her sapphire eyes snapped open, her breath catching as she awoke. She lay there panting, confused as to what she had just dreamed and why she was so afraid. It was so long ago, but it would never leave her mind. When would she get over this? When could she ever recover? She hated living in the shadow of her past. Every time she tried to break free, it's dark hand would just snatch her right back up. It never ended. Calmed down, Hayashi let out a sigh and rested her head on her paws. As she did, she felt foreign fur brush her cheek. Startled, her head shot up, eyes searching in the dark for what had just touched her. As she looked, Hayashi saw a sleeping body next to her.
For a moment, her heart stopped. The fur looked like the brown, thick fur she had become used to in her past. Fur she had slept against every night, loved every night. Xercese. The rational part of her mind told her it couldn't be possible, but oh, how she wanted it to be true. How she missed him. Heart pounding, she nuzzled into the fur, taking in the scent. But as she did, she knew she was mistaken to who was sleeping next to her. It was not Xercese, but a wolf who confused her more and more each day, seeming to tie her heart into knots and them shatter it. But a wolf she still ran back to for security. Reiner.
Why was he here? She racked her brain for the right answer, but it just didn't seem to come to mind. Nothing did. Why couldn't she remember what happened? What did they do last night? It didn't make sense why he would be here, but she couldn't come up with a reason.
Trying to find the right thing to do, decided she needed some fresh air. Last time she checked, her and Reiner weren't on good terms and now she wasn't even sure where they were. She could never tell what he was feeling or thinking as it was. Whenever it seemed that he was falling for her, too, it all blew up and things went back to how they were before. And she just became more insecure about reaching out to him.
She padded up to the mouth of the den, scanning her lands that now stretched out in front of her. All was normal out there, at least. Taking a deep breath of the morning air, she sat, gazing up at the sun just now glancing over the far mountains as she thought about the predicament. She wasn't offended with what had happened, just nervous. She didn't want Reiner to get mad; he often did when they got close. However, she didn't want to admit to him that she did like it. He would expect her to be mad, so shouldn't she be? She'd gotten use to hiding things with her anger, but most times she felt Reiner could look right through her. He knew her act and that made her nervous, too. Her mind was a blur, but she just had to wait for him to react first.
